Micah Richards criticises ‘ridiculous’ off-pitch decision from Spurs’ Richarlison

Football pundit Micah Richards has criticised Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison for getting a ‘ridiculous’ tattoo featuring his own face alongside Brazil legend Ronaldo and PSG striker Neymar.

Richarlison joined Spurs last summer from Everton in a reported £60 million deal (Sky Sports) but has struggled in his first season with the Lilywhites.

The 25-year-old finally scored his first Premier League goal for Spurs in the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, but has just three goals all season for his new club (Transfermarkt).

His campaign has been interrupted by multiple injuries, but many pundits feel Richarlison could and should have performed better this year.

His form at international level has been outstanding of late, however. Richarlison enjoyed a fruitful World Cup with Brazil at the end of 2022, and now has 20 goals in 42 appearances for his country (Transfermarkt).

To celebrate his international success, Richarlison decided to get a fairly large tattoo on his back last year. The ink features his own face alongside Brazilian stars Neymar and Ronaldo.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Richards commented on Richarlison’s questionable body art, and was particularly nonplussed by the choice to have a national teammate as part of the tattoo.

Richards said: “It’s a bit ridiculous. R9 [Ronaldo], legend of the game. Neymar, outstanding player, but Neymar is his teammate. It’s like me getting a tattoo of Daniel Sturridge!”

I mean, I would personally never get a tattoo of any face, never mind a fellow football player.

But that’s just how Richarlison is – he’s flamboyant and is clearly very passionate about his involvement with Brazil, and obviously just wanted to pay homage to two players he feels are important to Brazil.

The fact that Neymar still plays now and plays alongside Richarlison is a bit odd, but it’s harsh to criticise someone for the things they do with their own body.
