Michael Bridge suggests 25-year-old could be answer to Spurs creativity

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has suggested that James Maddison might be the man Tottenham need to solve their creativity issues in the middle of the park.

Despite winning six and drawing two of their first nine Premier League matches, and scoring 20 goals in the process, Spurs have come under criticism for being too conservative (talkSPORT).

Stats suggest that Antonio Conte’s side rank 12th in the Premier League in terms of possession and 20th in terms of passes into the final third game (Sky Sports), with some questioning if the club’s results are sustainable, given the way they play (The Times).

Even after Tottenham became the first team to win at the Amex Stadium this season on Sunday, Ian Wright and Micah Richards suggested that the Lilywhites still lack creativity in the middle of the park (BBC MOTD).

Bridge believes that Maddison is just the kind of player that Conte’s men are missing.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I’d love to see James Maddison at Tottenham. I understand where the fans are coming from in terms of not enjoying the football. I love seeing a team that can pass the ball, I love creative midfielders. I used to love watching Michael Carrick and Luka Modric at Tottenham.”

It is clear that Conte does not want to play with a recognised number eight. Otherwise, he would have prioritised signing an attacking midfielder in the summer.

The creativity in our system comes from the front men and our wing-backs, with the midfielders mostly being used just to recycle the ball and cover spaces.

In fact, I do not think Maddison will fit into our system as he could only feature as one of the two number tens in a 3-4-3.
