Michal Richards 23-year-old Spurs star has not lived up to expectation

Micah Richards has claimed that Steven Bergwijn has failed to live up to his billing during his time at Tottenham so far.

A potential front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Gareth Bale was talked about at the start of a season but it is Bergwijn who has been Mourinho’s preferred starter ahead of the Welshman more often than not this season.

The Dutch winger has put in a major defensive shift on occasions and has shown glimpses of his quality on the ball.

However, he has been lacking in overall output as he is yet to find the back of the net this season in 15 league appearances to date.

Tottenham’s form has slumped considerably over recent weeks but Richards admitted that the North Londoners have some players who can do better.

The pundit named Begwijn as one of the Tottenham stars he wants to see more from going forward.

He told BBC Radio Five Live Sport: “They still have some good players.

“You mentioned Ndombele, he’s fantastic and he had a couple of assists. Great, great, great feet.

“Bergwijn’s not really lived up to the expectation. I want to see a little bit more from him.

“And it was only a month or two ago that we were talking about them being title contenders.”

Although Bergwijn has not chipped in with the expected number of goals and assists, the Dutchman has played well this season. One of the reasons Mourinho keeps picking him is because the 23-year-old does the job that is asked of him. If Bergwijn is not burdened with as much defensive responsibility as he is currently, I believe we will see him have a much bigger impact in the final third.
