Michel Vorm points out the bonus of having Eric Dier next to Cristian Romero

Michel Vorm has explained that Eric Dier is an important piece in Tottenham’s defence due to his ability to speak multiple languages.

The 27-year-old has established himself as a mainstay in the Tottenham defence under Nuno Espirito Santo, playing in each of Spurs’ eight Premier League games this season.

Dier, who joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, was born in England but moved to Portugal with his family at the age of seven.

His time in Lisbon equipped him with the ability to speak both Portuguese and Spanish, while maintaining his English roots.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Vorm believes Dier’s upbringing and his ability to speak multiple languages is a major asset for the club, as he is able to communicate with Brazil’s Emerson Royal, Argentine centre-back Cristian Romero and Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon.

Speaking on Stadium Astro, he said: “The good thing with Eric Dier is that he speaks Spanish, he speaks Portuguese, he speaks English, so there’s also an easy thing with Emerson on the right, Romero next to him and Reguilon on the left because the language barrier.

“That’s also a good thing. If they go from there, I think, them four, I think could be a solid defence.”

Dier has not had a bad season so far overall, and he is forming a good partnership in defence with summer signing Romero.

It is clear that his multilingual ability is being put to use in helping Romero and Emerson settle in, as well as being able to break the language barrier on the pitch.
