Midfielder is being wrapped in ‘cotton wool’ ahead of potential Spurs switch

Johnny Cardoso is being wrapped up in cotton wool by his club as they do not want to jeopardize receiving a fee for him in the summer, with Tottenham expected to make a move for the player.

The midfield department is expected to be a priority for Ange Postecoglou to address in the summer, particularly given Yves Bissouma’s continued struggles this season and Rodrigo Bentancur’s lack of consistency.

One La Liga man will undoubtedly be near the top of the North London club’s wishlist after Tottenham acquired a £21m option to buy Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis last summer while striking a deal for Giovani Lo Celso.

The 23-year-old has been in exemplary form of late and his progress would certainly have not gone unnoticed at Hotspur Way.

Real Betis do not want to ruin Johnny Cardoso to Spurs move

According to a report in AS Betis are now protecting Cardoso and trying to prevent him from getting injured as they do not want to jeopardise their chances of a summer sale.

The outlet reveals that the American has had an ‘overload’ of minutes of late and has thus been wrapped ‘in cotton wool’ ahead of Betis’ Europa Conference League clash against Vitoria de Guimaraes on Thursday.

Cardoso wants to play the second leg but the La Liga club are wary of risking him as they are aware that a serious injury at this stage may affect his chances of a summer move to Tottenham.

What Tottenham feel about Cardoso and his clause

This update comes just a week after it was reported that Tottenham are confident that Cardoso will be worth the investment in the summer.

It was explained that the North London club will continue to keep a close eye on the USA international’s performances until the summer before making a final decision.

However, they have allegedly been left very impressed by the 23-year-old’s recent displays and are ‘edging towards taking advantage’ of their option to buy.
