Midfielder reveals he came to close to snubbing current club for Tottenham

Pape Cheikh Diop has had a great season in the heart of Lyon’s midfield and has been a pivotal part of the club’s excellent performances in the Champions League and Ligue 1 this season.

The 21-year-old has really come alive in what is his second season with the French club having moved from moved to Lyon in a £12m deal from Celta Vigo in the summer of 2017.

However, the Senegalese has revealed that he came close to joining Spurs during that window.

He said that Tottenham were also interested in acquiring his services and that the offer from the North London club proved tempting.

Speaking to Spanish news outlet AS, Papa Cheikh said, “It was a hard decision. Tottenham also wanted me and the truth that their name sounded louder.”

He claimed he had made the right call moving to Lyon instead of Spurs as the club have a tradition of trusting young players. He added, “But the idea of Lyon attracted me.

“I knew it was a club that works with young people, you work with them, they help you grow. And I think I guessed right.”

Given how well the midfielder has adjusted to life in France, he would have certainly proved valuable for Spurs at the minute given how short the team is when it comes to center midfield options.
