Midfielder says Tottenham friendship is stronger than his international rivalry

Rodrigo Bentancur has been speaking to the press about the fiery crash between Uruguay and Argentina back in November of last year, admitting that all was well between him, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso after the final whistle.

Bentnacur is quite close with the likes of Romero and Lo Celso, with the Spanish-speaking contingent at Tottenham, which also consists of the likes of Pedro Porro, Bryan Gil, and Emerson Royal, always being seen together.

However, the South Americans certainly do not hold back when they don their national team shirts and they have been involved in some physical battles with each other on the pitch during recent internationals.

That was once again the case when Urugway travelled to Argentina back in November of last year, with Bentancur’s side coming away with a 2-0 win from La Bombonera.

Bentancur and Cristian Romero always remain friends

As one would expect when those two sides meet, some nasty tackles were flying in during the game, but Bentancur admitted that all was well between him and his Tottenham teammates after the final whistle.

He told ESPN “After the game, I went to the Argentina locker room to talk a little with Cuti and with Gio too, and I already touched (Lionel) Messi’s shirt also because Luis (Suárez) was there. “I took Messi, Cuti and Gio’s shirt!”

“We are not much for joking around. Yes, Cuti wanted to tease me before, he told me that we were going to win for sure and in the end, it ended up happening; but after the game nothing, we just kept calm.

“It was a lot of years there at La Bombonera (when he was with Boca Juniors). To be able to be back in that stadium, on that pitch was a very nice feeling, also because of those people, most of whom were Boca fans. It was very nice to be back in that stadium.”

With Copa America this summer, one would expect Richy, Emerson, Cuti, Gio, and Bentancur to be involved in some fierce battles on the pitch and they will certainly not shy away from a tackle against their Tottenham teammates.
