Hotspur failed with an approach for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes in the summer. The Portuguese club rejected Tottenham’s approach despite Fernandes making it clear to the club that he would like to leave (GQ Portugal).

Sporting haven’t enjoyed had the best of starts to the season as they currently sit in 5th position in the Primeira Liga.

The 25-year-old was sent off in a draw away at Boavista last weekend and Sporting were beaten in midweek by PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

After the loss to PSV on Thursday, Fernandes was interviewed by Portuguese publication O Jogo (as relayed by Sports Witness) and he once again admitted of his desire to play in England.

However, the Portuguese international also insisted that he has always been happy at Sporting.

Fernandes said: “Of course I’m happy. I have the desire to play England, this is the league I want to play, there are other clubs from other countries and I have the ambition to get there, but when I came to Portugal I had the ambition to play at Sporting, in a great club, and I’m still delighted.

“Regardless of whether we’re not in the best shape, I believe we’ll quickly return to that desired form.”

While Sporting might not be in great form, Fernandes has still been a class apart, managing four goals and four assists in only seven appearances so far this season (Sport Witness).

Spurs Web Opinion

I think it was always going to be just one of either Bruno Fernandes or Giovani Lo Celso and I believe Spurs have got the better player. Even if Christian Eriksen leaves in January, I don’t see Spurs breaking the bank to bring in Bruno Fernandes given the options we have in the position.
