‘Miles off it’ – Pundit says new Spurs signing is worse than two former players

Kieron Dyer has claimed that Tottenham’s summer signing, Emerson Royal, is miles off the likes of former Spurs right-backs, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier.

Tottenham announced on the transfer deadline day this summer that they had reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Emerson Royal for a fee of £25.8m

The Brazilian had only arrived at Camp Nou earlier in the summer after Barcelona exercised the buy-back clause inserted when sending him to Real Betis in 2019.

After a shaky start to life at Tottenham, Emerson has really come to the fore in the North London club’s last two Premier League games against Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Despite featuring for Brazil in their 4-1 win over Uruguay in the early hours of Friday morning (UK time), Nuno Espirito Santo opted to hand the right-back a start against the Magpies and the 22-year-old certainly repaid the Portuguese coach’s faith by putting in a competent display.

Emerson had the difficult task of coping with the effervescent Allan Saint-Maximin and he did a commendable job for the most part while also providing width down the right-hand side.

However, Dyer has not been impressed by what he has seen from the former Real Betis man so far.

He said on Sky Sports Premier League (7:31 pm, October 17, 2021): “Tottenham had Trippier and Kyle Walker as right-backs. The right-back they recruited, Royal, miles off it, for me personally, miles off it. For me, miles off it.”

The thing to keep in mind with Emerson is that he is only 22. The Brazilian is only two months older than Tanganga, and so has plenty of time to develop into a top right-back.

It is worth remembering that Walker was a relatively unknown young talent when he arrived at Spurs and it took him a few years to develop into the player he did.

In fact, it was Kyle Naughton’s signing that was thought as a bigger coup for Spurs at the time than Walker’s when both players were snapped up from Sheffield United.
