Tottenham Hotspur fans are divided over Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract talks following his poor display against Bournemouth.
Last month, reports emerged that Tottenham Hotspur are set to open contract negotiations with Rodrigo Bentancur.
Bentancur’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2026, meaning a renewal is necessary if Spurs are to retain the Uruguay international.
His time in north London has been mixed—under Antonio Conte, he was a standout performer, but since Ange Postecoglou took charge, particularly this season, his displays have been underwhelming.
Nevertheless, he remains a key player for Spurs, having accumulated 2,043 minutes on the pitch.

Rodrigo Bentancur’s struggles raise questions over new deal
His recent performances have been poor, to say the least. With him at the heart of midfield, Spurs have consistently been overrun, and the version of Bentancur that fans admired under Conte has looked a shadow of his former self.
This decline has sparked debate over whether he truly deserves a contract extension, and supporters have not held back in expressing their opinions.
One fan voiced frustration: “He’s consistently inconsistent & always collecting yellows…wouldn’t give him a new contract at this time.”
Another supporter offered a different perspective: “Our midfield has been obliterated, so there has not been an opportunity to build relationships or even play him in his best position this season. He is adaptable too, although I prefer him a bit further forward. I would keep him personally. I would like him to play with a proper defensive midfielder.”
Noel Murray did not hold back: “Has not played well in a long time now & keeps picking up needless yellow cards, which is a bad sign—it shows a player who is not tuned in properly. I would sell based on current form. He needs a miraculous turnaround to stay. Of course, Bissouma should definitely be sold in the summer.”
Mel Price added a humorous take: “Yeah, do it, give him what he wants—any wage! Then when he goes to sign it, make sure the pen is missing! See how he likes it when things go missing at important times.”
Another fan pointed to managerial factors: “It all depends if Ange is there next season. I do not think he suits his system, whatever that is! He would be great in a Frank system.”
A more ruthless assessment came from another supporter: “Bad attitude and has not done enough to justify it. Need to be a bit more ruthless.”
Is Rodrigo Bentancur worth the gamble for Tottenham?
On the balance of things, the Uruguayan’s performances have not justified a new contract. Footage from the FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa exposed Bentancur’s lack of effort in their second goal, which added to fans’ frustrations.
Against AZ Alkmaar, he once again picked up a yellow card, meaning Rodrigo Bentancur would now miss the return leg in the Europa League. But, as some fans have pointed out, there is still a player in there—perhaps one who needs the right setup to flourish.
A proper defensive midfielder alongside him could make a difference, unlocking his best attributes. As a squad player, he might still have value, but whether he is worth a long-term commitment remains up for debate.
