Modric wants Champions League football with Spurs every year

Luka Modric has spoken of the desire in the Tottenham camp for more Champions League football after an impressive debut campaign.

Spurs have exceeded expectations in the competition so far, beating more established Champions League sides like Werder Bremen and the current holders Inter Milan in the group stage.

They now hold a slender 1-0 win over AC Milan in the last 16, after securing a memorable win in the San Siro.

Now Modric has claimed the squad is hooked and they need to push for qualification every year.

“Yes, it’s true, we need to do what the big teams are doing.

“Everyone wants to play in the Champions League, it’s an unbelievable competition.

“We want to carry on enjoying the feeling and that is why we need to make sure we qualify again this season.”

Spurs challenge for fourth place has slipped away in recent weeks, with a haul of just one point from games at Blackpool and Wolves seeing fall three points behind Chelsea.

But Modric is happy with how the squad has handled playing domestic and European football, expecting the race for the final two Champions League spots to be battled for by four teams.

“We can handle both competitions, it’s not too much for everyone. We have shown we are capable of doing that.

“Ot will be a tough fight for fourth place with Manchester City, Chelsea and maybe Liverpool. The way they played against Manchester United, you can’t count them out.”

Modric is now looking forward to helping Spurs progress in this season’s Champions League, but knows the tie is far from over, despite winning in Milan in the first leg.

“We have big confidence and a great belief in our quality and we showed that in Milan against a great side – but this far from over. We can’t underestimate Milan and think it’s finished.

“They are a great side and we need to stay focused and concentrated and prepare like we did in Milan. It will be a great night again – it will probably be the best atmosphere that we have known here.”
