Luka Modric has spoken of his pride of captaining Tottenham Hotspur during the 1-0 friendly win against West Ham on Wednesday.

The Croatian skippered Harry Redknapp’s side during the first half, before Robbie Keane came on.

“It’s always a big honour for a player to be chosen as captain and it was an honour for me to be captain of Tottenham,” Modric told the official Spurs site.

“I was delighted to have been given the opportunity and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’d like to thank Harry for choosing me.”

“We have to be happy with how we played, especially in that heat.

“We need to keep going, to keep improving and be ready for the first day of the season. Liverpool is a very tough game on the opening weekend and the start of the season is very important.”
