Mourinho admits he has doubts over areas of his Spurs side

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has admitted that he is starting to have some doubts about the team’s defence after their struggles in recent matches.

While Tottenham have no issues in scoring goals since Mourinho took over last month, the defensive problems that we witnessed towards the end of Pochettino’s reign have persisted.

Spurs came away with a 2-2 draw against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday with both of the Canaries goals coming from individual errors at the back from the visitors.

Mourinho chose to start with Juan Foyth for the match and the Argentine was at fault for the first goal when he gave the ball away trying to dribble his way out of trouble.

Norwich’s second came courtesy of miscommunication between Toby Alderweireld and Serge Aurier with the Belgian’s interception deflecting off the Ivorian into the back of the net.

When asked if the recent mistakes at the back have created doubts in his mind about Spurs’ defence, Mourinho told the Daily Mail: “It’s normal, no? Do I have doubts that Harry Kane is my number nine? Do I have doubts that Dele Alli is my number 10 for example?

“Performances create your doubts or performances kill your doubts, that’s just the way it is.”

It looked as if Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen had turned a corner and got back to their best since Mourinho arrived. However, both players were well below par on Saturday just like they have been for the best part of 2019. Perhaps, these are signs that neither Toby nor Jan will ever be the players they once were.
