Mourinho asked whether he is confident of a top four finish with Spurs

Jose Mourinho was asked in his press conference today how confident he is that Tottenham will be playing Champions League football next season.

At the start of the campaign, there were two routes into the top tier European competition for the Lilywhites, the Europa League and the Premier League.

Spurs would have needed to win the Europa League in order to qualify for the 2021/22 Champions League tournament but that is no longer possible after Dinamo Zagreb dumped them out at the Round of 16 stage in embarrassing fashion.

Mourinho must therefore lead his side to a top-four finish in order to qualify, with the North Londoners currently sitting just three points behind Chelsea in fourth.

Chelsea are on 51 points, with West Ham just behind on 49 and Spurs on 48. However, that isn’t where the race ends, as Liverpool and Everton are on 46 and Leicester are not out of reach in third on 56 points.

Asked how confident he is of Champions League football next season, Mourinho said (Football London): “I’m confident that we can win on Sunday. Then on Monday if you ask me I will be confident that we can win against Manchester United next week.

“I can repeat to you after every match the ambition and the confidence to win the next match.

“To reach a Champions League position I don’t think we depend on ourselves. We depend also on results from other teams. I’m not going to say we are going to do it or not going to do it. We are going one game at a time and the last season was a very good example.

“We were quite a distance, we had a big distance to the top six positions and in the end, in the last minute of the last match we confirmed that position and we have to go in that direction.”
