Mourinho claims he saw the best of these two players against Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur continued their winless streak in domestic football against Liverpool at the weekend, despite playing well in the match.

Spurs drew to Norwich City before the New Year, losing to Southampton on New Years Day, then drawing to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup before taking on Liverpool.

The Reds were on the front foot for the first half, with the likes of Japhet Tanganga, Toby Alderweireld, and Davinson Sanchez defending expertly in their own third.

However, after the referee made a mistake regarding a throw-in which was given to Liverpool, the Spurs defence switched off and Roberto Firmino gave the Reds the lead.

While Spurs vastly improved in the second half and knocked on the door of an equaliser, they were unable to find one and lost the game 1-0.

Despite this, Mourinho claims that he saw the best from Sanchez and Alderweireld against Liverpool and that there were positives to take from the defeat.

He said (Football London): “The positives were a team in a very difficult situation playing as a team, playing against the best team by far in the country. For long periods of the game we were not inferior and for some periods we were the strongest team.

“A debut of a young kid from the academy, English, against people like Salah and Mane, who are obviously in the group of the top players in the world, good empathy from players and supporters, which is not easy when the season is not a good season and the result is even a defeat.

“Better levels of concentration which makes me feel that, what I’m crying for, time to work, that time to work can improve the team and the players at every level, which equals a week of good work.

“I saw the best Davinson Sanchez, the best Alderweireld, I saw the best level of focus and concentration from the players. Of course we have some limitations but we know that, but in very difficult circumstances, the game was a good game.”
