Mourinho comments on possibility of third tier European football for Spurs

Jose Mourinho has insisted that Tottenham would treat the Europa Conference League with the same respect that they give to other competitions should the club find themselves in it next season.

Any lingering hopes that Tottenham had of finishing in the top four received a massive blow after their 2-2 draw at Goodison Park yesterday.

It is increasingly starting to look as though Europa League qualification is the best Spurs can hope for in the Premier League this season.

It is also possible that the North Londoners could find themselves in the UEFA Europa Conference League next year, a new third-level competition with one place for an English side.

Spurs will automatically enter the competition should they win the Carabao Cup but if the winners of the competition have already qualified for the Europa League, it passes down to those in the Premier League standings, potentially as far down as eighth place.

Mourinho insisted that the Lilywhites would try to win the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League if they found themselves in the competition next season.

He told Football.London: “We would treat the Conference League] as we treat every competition.

“Every competition we try to win every match and of course we don’t. We never thought we were going to do that, but since the beginning of the season, this season, we try to treat every competition the same way.

“So I don’t see any reason not to treat the competitions with the same respect. If the dimension of the club and prestige of the club is bigger than let’s say the level or the prestige of any competition then I still feel it is the responsibility of the club to respect the competition and to bring to the competition probably the credit or the prestige that at that moment, the competition does not have.

“So I think it is this, you have to respect every competition you are involved in.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think most Spurs fans would prefer to finish below eight and avoid European competitions altogether if we finish outside the Champions League and Europa League places. The Europa Conference League will prove nothing more than a pointless midweek distraction.
