Mourinho hopeful that midfielder will be available to face Middlesbrough

Jose Mourinho has revealed that he expects Eric Dier to be available for this weekend’s FA Cup third round tie.

The midfielder was absent from the Tottenham Hotspur squad which lost 1-0 at Southampton yesterday afternoon after it was revealed he was suffering from a virus.

After failing to feature regularly under Mauricio Pochettino this season, Dier has been brought in from the cold by new head coach Jose Mourinho.

Spurs travel to Jonathan Woodgate’s Middlesbrough on Sunday in a competition which realistically represents the North London club’s best chance of winning silverware this season.

Dier has struggled with his health over the past year or so. The 25-year-old had to undergo emergency surgery to remove his appendix in December 2018 and his recovery was hampered by illness with the player admitting that his immune system struggled to cope with the medication he was taking following surgery (Independent).

He also had to undergo a procedure during the summer to rectify a problem.

Mourinho told the club’s official Twitter channel when asked about the cup tie: “Son will be back from suspension, and I think Dier will be back from his illness.”
