Mourinho makes strong statement about Eriksen and Vertonghen new contracts

After Toby Alderweireld signed a three and a half year contract with Spurs on Friday, Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho has shared his desire to see both Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen follow the 30-year-old’s lead and commit their futures to the club.

Both players, like Alderweireld, will see their current contract run out at the end of the season and but the new Spurs boss has admitted that he would sign a new deal with Tottenham if he was in either players’ shoes.

The 56-year-old spoke about the journey both players have had at the club for the last several years and urged them to be a part of the club’s future.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said, “If I was Jan or Christian, I would stay because they have been here for such a long time.

“They are living the life of the club in the past four, five years, the transition to White Hart Lane to the best stadium in the world, the perspectives of the future, the vision of the club, if I was them I would say I want to be part of the next thing.”

While the Portuguese manager refused to get into the specific roadblocks that were preventing Eriksen from extending his stay at the club, he did hint that Vertonghen’s agent wasn’t too keen on getting the 32-year-old to sign a new deal.

The Spurs head coach added, “I would like Jan to sign a new contract. [And] the only thing I will say about Christian is that I want him to sign a new contract. Apart from that, I won’t say anything else [about him].

“I think a player will sign a contract when the club wants – I am the club, Mr Levy is the club – when the player wants, when the family wants, when the agent wants. If one of these parts doesn’t want it is very difficult to happen, unless the player changes agent and gets one that also wants [it].”

The Spurs boss is certainly not ruling out the possibility of both players extending their stay at the club, which is positive news. However, I think it is highly unlikely that he is going to change Eriksen’s mind and so I see us selling him in January. I expect Vertonghen to get another one-year extension before the end of the season.
