Mourinho opens up on his relationship with Eriksen and whether he could leave next month

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Jose Mourinho has given an insight into his relationship with Christian Eriksen.

The Dane revealed just days after the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in June that he wanted to leave the North London club in order to seek a new challenge whilst also inviting contact from Real Madrid (Ekstra Bladet).

Eriksen is out of contract at the end of the season and will be able to agree on a pre-contract deal with any potentially interested parties on the continent from next month when the transfer window opens before walking away as a free agent in the summer.

Mourinho has only picked the playmaker once in the starting line up of the six matches he has had in charge since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino (transfermarkt).

The Portuguese revealed that he has had some honest discussions with the former Ajax player about his future and insisted that it is up to Eriksen if he wishes to disclose his future plans.

“I cannot answer that. I think it is a personal thing. I am not going to share,” Mourinho told Football.London

“He was so honest with me and I was so on honest with him that our relationship is really, really good.

“We have a very good relationship that started on day one. I am not going to betray that trust and relationship.

“I just share this intimate conversations with the structure of the club and Christian obviously knows I am an important part of the club and my job is to share with the structure but to you, it is not for me to say.

“It is up to Christian to tell anything he wants to or not.”

He added: “Every time I play him, I think he shows clearly the quality he has and he tries to help the team when he’s on the pitch which is an important thing for me, independent of his future.”

Mourinho refused to comment on the prospect of the club cashing in on Eriksen next month when the window opens.

“I cannot answer that. I don’t know,” he added.

“I only know his contract ends at the end of the season and the conversations I have had with Christian are private conversations that I am not going to share.”
