Jose Mourinho claimed in his press conference today that Manchester United are now among the favourites to win the Europa League this season (Jonathan Veal).
The Red Devils were relegated into the second division of European competition last night when they lost 3-2 against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
The defeat sealed United’s fate, ensuring that they finished third in their group behind Leipzig and PSG, thus demoting them to the Europa League.
Tottenham Hotspur have already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition after drawing with LASK last week in Austria.
This means that Mourinho could eventually be reunited with his former club in the Europa League after winning the competition with them during his time in the hot seat.
In response to Man United dropping down, Mourinho labelled them as one of the favourites while also claiming that it was unfair for Champions League clubs to enter the Europa League mid-way through the season (Charlie Eccleshare).
Mourinho says he objects to CL teams dropping down to EL as “a point of principle”. Calls it “not fair”. Would be amazing if Spurs play United, preferably in the final.
