Mourinho reveals how Erik Lamela touched him in training with thoughtful comment

Tottenham Hotspur duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli grabbed all the headlines this afternoon as the Lilywhites welcomed Brighton to the new stadium.

However, the game also marked the return of Erik Lamela to the Spurs match squad after nearly two months out with his latest in a long line of injuries.

Lamela had started the season well under Mauricio Pochettino, but was once again cut down by a nasty injury that halted his progress.

This was the Argentine’s first appearance on the bench for Jose Mourinho since the Special One took over at the club.

Even though Lamela only just returned to first-team training, the winger apparently made it clear to Mourinho that if he needed him he would be there for 10-15 minutes.

With the injury and suspension issues Mourinho is dealing with, the manager claims he was touched by the offer from Lamela, eventually naming him among the subs in case they needed a goal.

Mourinho said (Football London): “Lamela, 57 or 58 days without the team, trained with the team twice after all that time and he came to me and said ‘I think you need me because you have injuries or suspension, if you need me for 10-15 minutes I’ll be there’. If we needed a goal then he was there for us. That sort of thing touches me.”
