Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Jose Mourinho has ruled out either Eric Dier or Erik Lamela playing in the upcoming Europa League game against Maccabi Haifa.
This comes after Spurs defeated Chelsea on penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last night, just 48 hours before they are due to play Maccabi at the same venue.
The Lilywhites have been forced to play Newcastle, Chelsea, Maccabi Haifa, and Man United in just seven days this week, meaning squad rotation will be important for Mourinho.
The Special One revealed in his post-match interview last night that he asked Dier to make a superhuman effort in defence in order to help out Alderweireld and Tanganga.
The England centre half answered those calls, and others, by winning the man of the match award in the Carabao Cup London derby.
Erik Lamela, who scored the equaliser for Spurs in normal time as well as a penalty in the shootout, was also praised by his boss after the game.
Mourinho said (Football London): “Amazing. Coco amazing. I can not play him Thursday. Amazing performance. You speak about Coco and I understand why but everybody was really, really good.
“What Eric Dier did is not human but I needed that. I needed that third centre-back. I knew we couldn’t play with Tanganga and Toby in a match of this dimension. First match of the season for Tanganga and I knew I couldn’t.
“So I needed Eric to make that incredible effort. Of course, he cannot play Thursday and this is the way we are organising very important matches, where you cannot go maximum strength and this is the way it is.
“I told the players before the game: ‘You have to think just about this game, forget the other game.’
“But I can’t do it. I am the one with my staff I have to, we have to think about more than one match at a time and that is really, really difficult.”
