Mourinho reveals what squad change Tottenham must make ahead of next season

Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham have to ensure that they make sufficient additions to the squad this summer to be able to cope with a possible repeat of this season’s injury crisis.

Tottenham have had terrible luck with injuries all season with several important players missing sizable chunks of the campaign.

The injury problems left Mourinho with very few options up front during the early months of the year, with Tottenham’s results suffering as a consequence.

The suspension of the league due to the pandemic proved to be a blessing in disguise for the walking-wounded at Spurs as it gave them time to get back to full fitness.

The team’s results have improved considerably since the restart, with Mourinho’s men demonstrating a ruthless streak both offensively and defensively of late.

The Tottenham boss does not believe that the team will be as unlucky wit regards to injuries next year but insists that the club have to build a squad capable of coping with a similar scenario.

He told Football.London:”I feel I think in this last period, it was very clear that Tottenham with all their best players available can be a very good team.

“You look at the season – they lost Lloris for a long time then Harry Kane and this one and that one.

“Now with everybody together you see a difference in stability, in performances, in results so we want to think that next season is not going to be such a negative season like this one.

“In case we have a similar situation, that’s what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to protect the squad against these unpredictable things you can’t control. Let’s try and have a better squad to be ready to face a dramatic situation like we had during this season.

“The other day I was telling Brendan [Rodgers] after our game, to lose at the same time Ricardo Pereira, Soyuncu, Chilwell, Fuchs – can he do a miracle?

“It’s very difficult so every club that has this kind of situation it’s difficult for everybody, even for the ones with incredible numbers of quality players… so it was very difficult for Tottenham since their one in the season.

“Do we think that next season we’re going to be less unlucky? Yes, but at the same time we need to try and protect ourselves and to protect ourselves is to build a squad better than this one, with a little bit more balance than this one so we can face these negative things that we’re not free to happen again.”

Based on Jose’s words, it sounds as if we will primarily be going after squad players in the summer rather than ones who can improve our starting eleven. That is not all that surprising given that the team appears quite settled since the restart and we do not have much money to throw around this summer.
