Mourinho says he knows why Spurs keep dropping points but may ‘never’ explain

Jose Mourinho has claimed that he knows exactly why Tottenham keep dropping points this season but may never openly explain.

Over the years, The Special One has always built his successful teams from a sturdy defensive base, capable of seeing out clean sheets and grinding out wins.

However, in North London this season, Mourinho has watched on as his side consistently get the lead in games before throwing it away with minutes to go.

In fact, the Lilywhites have now dropped 18 points from winning positions this season in the Premier League (Standard). To put that into perspective, only Brighton have a worse record with 20 points dropped and they are in a relegation scrap.

To even further outline the frustrating nature of Spurs’ ability to defend a lead, if they had dropped just half of those points from winning positions, they would be in the top four as things stand.

Mourinho explained that he knew why Spurs were having these issues but, when asked, refused to reveal the reasons.

He said (Standard): “I know why it happened and I know also that you can look at it in a different perspective.

“A team that starts matches well and starts winning matches means something positive, means something positive that you like to forget – the positive aspect of that.

“But I agree with you in the sense that if you’re in winning positions and you lose points from winning positions, there are also negative things side by side to it.”

Pressed on why, he added: “That’s what I’m not ready to discuss with you. I think it has to do with some of our qualities as a team but I’m not ready to discuss with you.”

Finally, asked when he would be ready, he said: “Maybe never.”
