Mourinho takes sly dig at Man City when asked whether Spurs would sign Messi

Jose Mourinho has seemingly taken a sly dig at Manchester City after claiming that only clubs who do not respect the Financial Fair Play rules could afford to sign Lionel Messi.

There were reports doing the rounds that the Argentine was set to leave Barcelona and join Manchester City this summer after the Catalans ended the season without a trophy (Sky Sports).

In an explosive interview with Goal.com last week, the 33-year-old admitted that he had asked to leave Barca but the club failed to honour their promise of allowing him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner revealed that he will now stay put at Barcelona, but only because he does not want to drag the club through a court-case.

However, that has not put an end to the speculation over Messi’s future, with City reportedly not giving up their chase (EuroSport).

When asked in an interview with JOE if he wanted to sign Messi, Mourinho responded: “For my top eleven team? Not for Tottenham. Just in top eleven. We respect Financial Fair Play at Tottenham. He can only go to a team that does not respect Financial Fair Play. So it is not Tottenham for sure.”
