Multiple sources claim Spurs are closing in on late deal for central defender

Multiple sources are now reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

Football Insider claim that Spurs have turned their attentions to the Chelsea man after accepting defeat in their chase for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar.

The report claims that Spurs have held extensive talks with Chelsea and that the two clubs are confident that a deal can be struck before the 11 pm transfer deadline.

The report does not mention whether it is likely to be a loan or a permeant transfer but a “big-money deal” is said to be on the cards.

It is suggested that Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his options in central defence and is hoping that the Rudiger will be snapped up before the deadline after the club’s pursuit of Skriniar collapsed.

Meanwhile, journalist Pete O’Rourke has also claimed that Spurs are working hard to sign Rudiger but he suggests that the Lilywhites are looking to complete a loan deal rather than a permeant one.

He adds that the North Londoners now have a free run at the Chelsea defender after AC Milan pulled out of the race for his signature, prioritising a deal for Mohamed Simakan instead.

Spurs Web Opinion

Going by reports, Rudiger was clearly a fall-back option for us in case we were not able to get Skriniar and it looks like we are looking to complete a deal for the Chelsea man now that the Slovak looks to be out of reach. One can understand why Jose wants Rudiger given his recovery pace as well as his ability to pay on the left-side of central defence but I do not expect him to be a starter for us. I expect it to be a temporary loan deal and I expect us to enter the market again for a central defender in January or next summer.
