Several Spurs fans took to social media last night to joke that Harry Kane was right not to square the ball to Raheem Sterling during the World Cup semifinal against Croatia in 2018.
This came after the Manchester City forward missed an absolute sitter against Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals on Saturday, a strike that would have made it 2-2.
Kane has long been accused of costing England a place in the 2018 World Cup final after he chose to go for goal from a tight angle instead of squaring it to Sterling for a tap-in.
However, the City forward spurned a similar tap-in against Lyon as he put the ball over an empty net from just a few yards out, with the whole goal gaping.
The miss proved to be the final nail in the coffin for City’s Champions League hopes as Lyon scored their third soon after, making it 3-1 on the night.
Here’s how some Spurs fans reacted as Pep Guardiola’s side crashed out of the competition on the back of Sterling’s shocking miss:

Kane didn’t square it cos he knew sterling would miss and be embarrassed, so he shot instead and took the criticism. pic.twitter.com/NR3cWNkQLX

Barca losing 8-2 to Bayern to make our result against them seem acceptable and Raheem Sterling missing an open goal to clear Harry Kane’s name. Probably the best weekend we’ve had all season ffs

If you think I’m sad enough to reply to every single ‘Kane should have squared it’ tweet in history with an imagine of that Sterling miss then you have a very correct idea of how sad I am

Spurs Web Opinion
Opposition fans have long used Kane not squaring it to Sterling as an excuse to have a go at the Spurs striker and so it was to be expected that Spurs fans would give it back to Sterling after his bad miss against Lyon. The reality is that even world-class forwards can suffer lapses in concentration and miss sitters.
