‘My choice’ – Luis Diaz on why he joined Liverpool amidst Spurs interest

Luis Diaz has explained that Liverpool was always his intended destination despite allegedly coming close to joining Tottenham in the January transfer window.

Diaz, 25, completed a move to the Reds from Porto worth an initial £37 million which could rise to as high as £49 million if add-ons are activated (Sky Sports).

But the Colombia international’s move to Anfield was less than straightforward, having been the subject of intense interest from Tottenham earlier last month.

Spurs reportedly had a £37.6 million bid rejected by Porto before Liverpool’s interest, with the Portuguese club holding out for a greater fee (The Guardian).

However, once Liverpool entered the frame, there was only ever one option for Diaz, who claims the Reds were always the club he wanted to play for.

Asked why he decided to join Jurgen Klopp’s side, Diaz told’s the club’s official website: “Because it’s a club that I’ve followed for a good while now, and I’ve always watched them play.

“It’s no secret that the Premier League is one of the best leagues around and I’ve followed the football here and watched it since I was a boy.

“And as for Liverpool, I don’t think I need to say much about them that hasn’t been said. It’s a great club, a real reference in the game, which has won many cups and league titles, and so Liverpool has always been my choice.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think Tottenham were prepared to pay just as much as Liverpool for Diaz, it’s just a deal wasn’t struck because he wanted to move to Klopp’s side. It’s tough, but not detrimental as left-wing wasn’t exactly a position that needed strengthening, despite his obvious qualities.
