National media claim Spurs star is now one of the best in the world in his position

TyC Sports have waxed lyrical about Cristian Romero on the back of Argentina’s 3-0 win away at Bolivia.

Romero was widely regarded as Argentina’s standout performer in their hard-fought 1-0 win over Ecuador in Buenos Aires last week.

In fact, several of his international teammates, including Lionel Messi and midfielder Rodrigo de Paul described him as the best central defender in the world (Mirror).

His manager Lionel Scaloni even likened the Tottenham star to ‘He-man’ after the game (D-Sports) while Argentine outlets also delivered unending praise for the defender (Ole via Sport Witness).

The claims coming out of the South American country about Romero being the best centre-back in the world did not go down well with some pundits, who accused Messi and co of simply trying to ‘gas up’ the Spurs star (ESPN FC).

Is Cristian Romero up there with the very best?

However, Argentine publications are doubling down on their statements, with TyC becoming the latest to suggest that the 25-year-old is up there with the best in the world.

They gave Romero an 8/10 for his performance against Bolivia and wrote about the defender: “Compete to be the best central scoreboard in the world right now. Everything a defender must do from start to finish.

“It is said that at height there is no need to try to anticipate. Cuti doesn’t care about anything, not even that. He did not fail in a single one of the thousand advances of him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The standard of Romero’s performances for Argentina has been excellent for over two years, with the Tottenham man playing a crucial role in their Copa America and World Cup wins. So, it is not surprising that he is held in such high esteem back home.

However, Romero cannot be in the debate for the best centre-back in the world unless he performs consistently for an extended period of time at club level, which he has not done at Spurs so far. While one can argue that he has the ability to become one of the best, he still has some way to go to get there.
