National media suggest Spurs man could replace Modric at Real Madrid

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is once again being linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid, after a Danish media outlet suggested he would be the perfect replacement for Luka Modric.

Hojbjerg joined Tottenham from Southampton in the summer of 2020 and has registered 110 appearances for the club since (Transfermarkt). The Danish midfielder is severely underrated and is one of the key unsung heroes at Spurs.

The combative midfielder is off to a good start this season, too, with two goals already in his first nine matches (Transfermarkt).

Real Madrid were rumoured to be interested in Hojbjerg over the summer, with manager Carlo Ancelotti a long-time admirer of the player (The Telegraph). No move materialised at the time, and it’s unknown if an approach was even officially made.

While on international duty for Denmark this week though, Hojbjerg has again caught the eye. Despite being on the losing end of a 2-1 defeat to Croatia, Hojbjerg was pinpointed as the man to replace his opponent on the night, Luka Modric.

Modric, now 37 years old, is still pulling the strings for club and country, but Madrid will no doubt want to prepare for his eventual retirement. According to Danish outlet BT and their post-match player ratings, Hojbjerg is the answer to Madrid’s problem.

The report read: ‘Maybe we have the replacement for Luka Modric at Real Madrid right here. The Spanish club is said to be in love with him.

‘We can easily understand that. Nominated for player of the month in the Premier League, but unfortunately it wasn’t today that he got the Spaniards to put half or a whole billion [Danish krone] for him. Although that should be his price.’

Hojbjerg may have only got a 3 out of 6 rating for his performance, but BT clearly saw enough to bank on a move to Madrid for the Dane. Their valuation of a billion Danish krone would put Hojbjerg’s price at around £85 million.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hojbjerg is an absolutely crucial component of the Spurs project and brings so much to the team. Not only is he an important player defensively, but his ability to drive forward with the ball and transition into attack is a key asset to our counter-attacking football.

I really hope Real Madrid don’t come knocking, but if they do, they’re going to have to pay a big fee to steal Hojbjerg away from us.
