National press praise ‘elegant’ Spurs star for performance on Tuesday

Rodrigo Bentancur has earned praise for his performance in Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Canada on Tuesday.

Bentancur has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers since arriving from Juventus in January, with the 25-year-old having formed a solid partnership in the middle of the park alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The midfielder has won Spurs fans over with his work rate, tenacity, technical quality and composure on the ball.

He arguably put in his best display in a Tottenham shirt in the 6-2 win over Leicester City ahead of the international break, scoring his first goal for the North London club in the process.

Bentancur started both of Uruguay’s international friendlies against Iran and Canada over the international break, with La Celeste falling to a 1-0 defeat to the Asian side last week before returning to winning ways against the Canadians.

El Pais were quite complimentary of the Tottenham man’s performance in their 2-0 win at Bratislava on Tuesday.

The publication wrote about Bentancur’s display: “Elegant on the way out with the ball. He cut and played with the ruffles on the outside.

“With De La Cruz he generated a very good connection. The clearest in the midst of the sloppiness that Uruguay had with the ball in the second half.”

Thankfully, Bentancur was substituted just after the hour mark against Canada, which means he will be relatively fresh for the all-important North London derby on Saturday. The 25-year-old needs to be at his best for us to come away with a result from the Emirates.
