National team manager describes Spurs star as ‘a volcano’ with ‘so much influence’

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand has insisted that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will be an important player for his side at the European Championship irrespective of whether he gets game time at Tottenham Hotspur.

While Hojbjerg had been an ever-present in Tottenham’s midfield under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, that has not been the case under Ange Postecoglou, with the 28-year-old reduced to a bit-part role at the North London side this season.

With the former Southampton man entering the final year of his contract at Hotspur Way this June, an exit from the club looks inevitable this summer.

However, Hojbjerg continues to be a crucial player for Denmark, having been capped 73 times for his country so far and Hjulmand has said that he has no concerns about the midfielder’s lack of game time at Spurs.

H said (via Bold): “I’m not that nervous about him right now. I hope he will play a lot before the Euros even though Tottenham are only in the Premier League and therefore doesn’t have that many other matches.”

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is like a volcano

The 51-year-old also dismissed the idea that Hojbjerg should be replaced ahead of Denmark’s Euros campaign, insisting that the Tottenham man is irreplaceable.

Hjulmand added: “If anyone thinks you can remove Pierre and replace him with someone else, it’s not true. He has been everything to us for the last three years. He is a volcano in the national team and has so much influence on our team.

“He is dominant with his physical strength and delivered a crucial goal against Finland. He has a passion that drives the team with ferocity. There is no doubt at all that Pierre has a huge impact on our entire team.”

“I find it hard to imagine replacing him for the Euros because he has such a huge impact and importance to our game. Of course, there is always a limit, but as the situation is right now, I trust Pierre 100%.”

For a major tournament, the experience of someone like Hojbjerg would be invaluable for Denmark and although he might not be a natural fit for Ange Postecoglou’s set-up, the Dane remains a fantastic asset for a counter-attacking side such as the Scandinavian nation.
