Ndombele dismisses suggestions of pressure due to bumper transfer fee

Tottenham Hotspur shattered their transfer record to secure the services of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for a fee that can rise to as much as £62.8m with add ons (BBC).

The 23-year-old was one of the most sought after midfielders in world football after his exploits with Lyon over the last two seasons.

In particular, his performances in the Champions League last season caught people’s eye as he showcased both his offensive and defensive qualities.

The French international will now have to prove that he can step up a notch and compete in the Premier League against some of the best midfielders in the world.

When asked if there will be considerable pressure that comes with the huge price tag, Ndombele denied that he felt any pressure because of the record fee. Instead, he said he considered it an honour to be the most expensive player in the club’s history and that he will now try to prove that he is worth the fee.

Speaking to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, the former Lyon man said, “No, I don’t have any pressure. I’m proud because I’m the club-record signing.

“Now what I have to do is show my quality on the pitch and show that Tottenham did well to spend this money on me.”

For a player who has had such a drastic rise over the last few years, he also responded rather calmly when asked about his exploits in recent seasons.

He added, “I don’t think too much. Yes, five years ago I was in Ligue 5, but I don’t think about it, I just try to give my best every year.

“I believe in God and if something happens, it happens. This year I have the opportunity to be in the Premier League.

“It’ll be a good experience for me and I’ll try to take it, give my best and we’ll see where I’ll be later.”

Ndombele’s talent on the pitch was evident for all to see in the second half of the game against Juventus last Sunday. He also seems like a player who has his head on his shoulders which will only help him learn and get adjusted to Tottenham’s system quicker.
