After the pair shared a heated exchange on the field during Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Brentford last night, it seems both James Maddison and Neal Maupay are not ready to put the argument to bed, with the pair taking the rivalry to Instagram now.
Neal Maupay opened the scoring for Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and proceeded to carry out James Maddison‘s signature celebration, the dart throw. Immediately after, the two embraced in a rather passive-aggressive exchange.
Clearly, the Spurs players didn’t take too kindly to Maupay’s actions, and upon scoring three quickfire goals, the likes of Brennan Johnson and Richarlison mocked Maupay’s attempt at Maddison’s celebration. In the end, it was Tottenham who got the last laugh, and the three points.

War of words continues between Maddison and Maupay
After the game, Maddison told TNT Sports questioned Maupay on the field, suggesting the Brentford man didn’t score enough goals to have his own celebration so he had to steal someone else’s.
Maddison then took to Instagram to share ‘a short story’ detailing Maupay’s ill-advised celebration, and the end result of the game.
Now, Maupay has returned the favour with his own Instagram post, in which he wrote: “Went a bit early with that one… Gutted we couldn’t get the win. More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison. We go again Monday, Bees.”
Maupay has 99 goals throughout his career in 361 appearances across various clubs in England and France (Transfermarkt). Maddison, meanwhile, has 82 goals from 330 appearances (Transfermarkt).

It’s funny that a striker who can count a quarter of his goals from the French league wants to compare his career to a midfielder who not only scores an impressive amount of goals but also contributes twice as many assists as Maupay ever has.
Plus, Maddison has an FA Cup winner’s medal and a Community Shield to his name, while Maupay has nothing. Still, hopefully Maupay got a few more Instagram followers after last night.
