‘Need to be winning trophies’ – Maddison keen to change narrative about Spurs

James Maddison has admitted that he and his Tottenham teammates are disappointed to end the season without silverware, remarking that they are desperate to end the club’s trophy drought.

While this season started with a lot of promise, it has once again fizzled out, with the Lilywhites set to end the campaign without any trophy for the 16th campaign in a row.

On the evidence of Spurs’ performances over the last couple of months, they are still quite a long way off competing for major honours.

However, Ange Postecoglou is adamant that some key foundations have been laid over the course of this season and that Tottenham can improve quite quickly if they can address a few gaps during the summer (Football.London).

Maddison says Spurs need to start winning trophies

Maddison believes that the club should be competing for the biggest prizes in the game and admitted that the players are keen to win one soon so that they can change the narrative around Tottenham always being the nearly-men.

The 27-year-old told Sky Sports: “We need to be winning trophies. This club has to be winning trophies. We have failed this year on that front. We are not going to have any pictures holding silverware which is disappointing.

“There is a lot of good teams, but that is the drive, the standard, the mentality we have to have to switch the narrative that Tottenham don’t win trophies. That will stay forever, until we do. We have got to go and do it.”

While we were never going to come close to competing for the Premier League title this season, the way we crashed out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the early stages was quite disappointing. Postecoglou would have to take those competitions and the Europa League quite seriously next season.
