‘Needs to snap out’ – Pundit criticises Kane for comments made on England duty

Chris Sutton has stated that Harry Kane ‘needs to snap out of his malaise’ if he wants to retain his spot in the England team and has hit out at the striker’s comments regarding his Tottenham form this season.

Kane has had trouble hitting his stride under Nuno Espirito Santo so far and has looked a shadow of the player that scooped up the Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker awards in 2020/21.

Things did not improve on international duty with the Three Lions this week, as he appeared an ominous figure in the 1-1 draw against Hungary at Wembley.

However, Kane leapt to his own defence of his performances this season following the World Cup qualifier, citing his record in front of goal as something not to be sniffed at.

“Obviously, I know there’s been a lot of talk about me. At the end of the day, I’ve still scored nine goals this season,” he told ITV Sport.

Former Scotland striker Sutton has taken particular issue with the Spurs talisman’s comments, considering none of his strikes have come in the Premier League as of yet.

Kane has scored three in the Europa Conference League, two in the competition’s qualifiers and another one in the Carabao Cup against Wolves.

He also tallied on three occasions during September’s international break against Hungary, Andorra and Poland, however, Sutton believes that is not enough for a player of his quality, and he needs to knuckle down quickly before he is displaced from his starting spot.

He wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Break that down and the fact you are on the verge of double digits loses its impact. The Premier League is where you get critics off your back. That is where the best players are judged.

“Kane needs to snap out of his malaise if he is to stay as his country’s undisputed first-choice under Southgate.

“Right now, the back-ups are now knocking down the door. Tammy Abraham is at Roma, scoring intermittently. Ollie Watkins is on a single goal this season. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still returning from injury. Marcus Rashford is closing in on his first appearance of the campaign.

“But say Kane continues to struggle throughout this campaign and one of his competitors goes on a silly scoring spree, what then?

“You cannot live off your reputation forever. This is football. It is about results. Kane needs to rediscover his scoring touch if he wants to stay untouchable.”

Kane is correct in referencing his nearly double-figure goal tally this season, but none have come in the Premier League, where Spurs arguably need him most. He needs to start getting back into his old ways soon otherwise more questions will be asked of him.
