‘Never got going’ – Spurs midfielder struggled this week ahead of Fulham clash

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seemingly had an off-day in Denmark’s over San Marino, with Ekstra Baldet not being too complimentary about his display on Tuesday night.

The Danes are tied on points with Slovenia at the top of Group H in the European Championship qualifiers and were expected to wipe the flour with San Marino, who are the whipping boys of the group, having failed to pick up a single point in their eight outings so far.

However, the clash at Serravalle proved to be a lot tighter than expected, with Alessandro Golinucci equalising for the home side on 61 minutes after Rasmus Hojlund had opened the scoring for Kasper Hjulmand’s men in the first half.

Hojbjerg struggled against low San Marino block

Yussuf Poulsen netted the match-winner in the 70th minute to spare the Danes’ blushes, and Hojbjerg, who played all 90 minutes for the visitors, was one of several players who were well short of his best by the sounds of it.

Ekstra Baldet gave him a two-star rating and wrote about his performance: “The ox in the middle never got going for what he’s good at. Pierre was unfriendly with the ball, tried dribbles that were impossible beforehand, and the runs were too few. But he was one of those who tried something.”

This is not ideal for Spurs, given that Hojbjerg is expected to get his first start of the season against Fulham on Monday, with Yves Bissouma suspended for the clash.
