‘New centre back coming soon’ – Fabrizio Romano drops Tottenham transfer hint after Toby exit

Fabrizio Romano has hinted on Twitter that Tottenham Hotspur will soon have a new central defender in their squad.

The Italian journalist made the claim when summarising the news that Tottenham had reached an agreement with Al-Duhail for Toby Alderweireld, which was confirmed by the club earlier this afternoon.

The Belgian’s departure from North London has Romano believing that Spurs will soon replace him.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, with Romano suggesting yesterday that Argentina international is their main transfer target, however, no deal had yet to be reached between the two clubs.

Romero was named Serie A defender of the year last season following his impressive displays at the back for Atalanta, having finished third in the Italian top flight.

Alderweireld’s departure is likely to set off a domino effect where the club are now in the position to use the funds received from the sale of the 32-year-old towards, hopefully, Romero.

Firstly, Atalanta must trigger their option to buy him from Juventus considering he is only currently on loan there, and are likely to make a healhy profit on his sale.
