New contract talks are still ‘ongoing’ between Spurs and star player – Journalist

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has confirmed that talks are ongoing between Tottenham and Son Heung-min over a new contract and revealed that the forward was badly affected by South Korea’s Asian Cup disappointment.

Historically, Spurs have not tended to offer bumper, long-term deals to players on the wrong side of 30 but according to various reports, the club are ready to buck that trend to tie down Son to a new contract.

It was suggested by HITC earlier this month that the Lilywhites are ready to accelerate efforts to tie down their captain to a long-term deal.

The report suggested that keeping Son at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is one of the club’s key targets leading up to the summer and asserted that the player is loving life under Ange Postecoglou.

This was also backed up two weeks ago by Football Insider, who stated that Spurs had already begun talks with the 31-year-old’s entourage and are now confident that he will put pen to paper on a new deal.

When asked if Tottenham are indeed negotiating a new contract with Son, Bridge has now told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, still ongoing. This is a player who, let’s face it, is just brilliant on the field, but a brilliant ambassador and obviously globally, so key to the football club. He’s been a great club captain since taking over from Harry Kane.

“He’s come back from the Asian Cup. He was very personally disappointed with the way it was done. I don’t think he had the best relationship in the world with Jurgen Klinsmann. Maybe that’s taken him a little bit of time to come back.”

Apart from Son being the leader of this young Spurs side and the face of the club globally, the forward is still very much at the peak of his powers as a player and has shown no signs of decline. That is why the Tottenham hierarchy will not have any qualms over handing him a bumper new deal with a significant pay rise.
