Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has given an update on the negotiations between Tottenham Hotspur and Sporting Lisbon for Pedro Porro, claiming talks will continue into next week.

While Porro had been identified as Tottenham’s top target for the January transfer window, reports from AS suggested there had been little development as Sporting Lisbon remained firm on their stance that only a bid meeting Porro’s £40m release clause would be accepted.

According to Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, part of the hesitation on Tottenham’s front to meet that release clause could be down to the fact that the full fee would need to be paid up front, whereas it is believed Spurs would rather arrange a deal with payments made in instalments.

Whatever the reason for the apparent lack of progress, it was suggested by Inter News that Spurs had turned their attention to Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries instead due to the deadlock on the Porro deal.

That may not be the case now though, as Romano tweeted this morning that when it comes to Porro and Spurs, “contacts are still ongoing with intermediaries” and the player himself is “keen on the move” to the North London side.

In a follow-up tweet, Romano added: “Discussions took place between Spurs and Sporting for Pedro Porro in the last 24 hours… and it will continue later this week. Tottenham will insist. Porro dreams of Premier League but it’s on the clubs now, as expected.”

With the transfer window closing in just 14 days, negotiations will have to move quickly in order for the deal to be done this month.

This is somewhat encouraging, to at least be in negotiations with Sporting and trying to thrash out a deal is better than just abandoning the move altogether. Porro would be a perfect addition to our squad and I really hope Spurs can get this over the line this month.
