New Spurs signing admits he wants to return to former club in the future

Tottenham’s summer signing Emerson Royal has admitted that he would like to play for Real Betis again in the future.

Tottenham announced on transfer deadline day that they had reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Emerson Royal for a fee of £25.8m.

The Brazilian had only arrived at Camp Nou earlier in the summer after Barcelona exercised the buy-back clause inserted when sending him to Real Betis in 2019.

Reports indicated at the time that the right-back was keen to prove his worth at Barcelona after two impressive campaigns at Betis and was disappointed by the club’s decision to sell him.

Emerson admitted last week that he was ‘shocked’ when the Catalan club informed him he was surplus to requirements and that the decision to join Spurs was easy after his conversations with the North London club’s hierarchy.

While the Brazilian might have some grievances with the way in which he was treated by Barca, he appears to have nothing but respect for Betis on the back of his two seasons with Los Verdiblancos.

Emerson admitted that he is sure he will return to Estadio Benito Villamarin later in his career.

He told DAZN: “They (Betis) helped me since I arrived, that I came from a Brazilian league that had nothing to do with the Spanish league.

“Surely, later on, I’ll play for Betis again.”

Besides his attributes as a player, it is evident already that Emerson has a fantastic attitude. I expect him to quickly become quite a popular figure in the Spurs dressing room once his English gets up to scratch.
