New Spurs signing claims he ‘was right’ to leave English club in 2017

Pierluigi Gollini has claimed that his decision to leave Aston Villa in 2017 turned out to be the right one after returning to English football with Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Tottenham have completed their first two signings of the summer, with Gollini’s capture last week being followed by the confirmation of Bryan Gil’s arrival on Monday.

The Italian shot-stopper became the first player to arrive through the doors in the Fabio Paratici era and will provide competition to Hugo Lloris next season.

While it was during his time at Atalanta that the 26-year-old’s reputation blossomed, the goalkeeper did have a brief spell in the Championship with Villa in the first half of the 2016/17 season.

In his first interview with Spurs TV, Gollini spoke about his experience at Villa Park and on being involved in an FA Cup tie at White Hart Lane.

He said: “Yes, I was on the bench (on facing Spurs in the FA Cup when he was at Villa).

“I didn’t play. We lost and I only played for six months at Villa. I had the chance to go to Atalanta.

“I thought that was the right choice to do at the time. And I guess I was right.”

The Italian international also insisted that he is in N17 to show that he can be the future of Spurs and expressed his desire to learn from Lloris.

Gollini is a perfect fit for what we needed as not only will he be an upgrade on Joe Hart as Lloris’ main understudy but he is also quite capable of proving that he can be the Frenchman’s eventual successor as Tottenham’s number one. The fact that the 26-year-old has arrived on an initial loan deal means that there is no risk involved for Spurs.
