Newcastle boss Steve Bruce hits back at ‘ridiculous’ Jose Mourinho criticism

Steve Bruce has defended Jose Mourinho ahead of Newcastle’s showdown against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon after admitting that he finds some of the criticism aimed at his managerial counterpart to be ridiculous.

Tottenham came under a lot of criticism after their 1-0 opening day defeat to Everton but the Lilywhites have since won three back-to-back matches away from home.

In fact, the loss against Everton is Tottenham’s only defeat in their last ten competitive matches, which suggests that they are on an upward trajectory.

Bruce raved about Spurs’ frontline after their acquisition of Bale and also came to the Tottenham boss’ defence.

As quoted by Newcastle Chronicle, he said: “Spurs have a world-class centre-forward in Kane, Son isn’t bad next to him either & then you add Gareth Bale to that. That’s what the Premier League is about.

“Mourinho will go down in folklore – how he gets criticised is ridiculous because he is one of the great coaches.”

Newcastle pulled off a shock 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season and Bruce admitted that he is hoping his side’s decent record against the top sides continue.

He added: “We can’t think we can go and play against the top teams and match them just in a game of football – we have to do something different, tactically.

“We did it well against the top teams last year. Let’s hope we can do the same again this year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Newcastle will look to sit deep and try to frustrate us while trying to nick a goal on a set-piece or a counter. An early goal will make our task on Sunday much easier but if it does not arrive, it is important that we remain patient, while maintaining our concentration at the back. It will certainly not be an easy test following our exertions in North Macedonia on Thursday.
