Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Newcastle United are now becoming increasingly confident of potentially winning the race to sign rumoured Tottenham target, James Maddison.
Maddison was arguably one of the best players across the Premier League during the first part of the season, with 11 goal contributions to his name in 13 games so far in 2022-23 (Transfermarkt).
Alasdair Gold revealed to Football.London last month that Tottenham have a ‘long-held interest’ in the Foxes star but suggested that it might take an ‘astronomical bid’ to convince Brendan Rodgers’ side to sell the player in January.
Over recent weeks, reports have suggested that the Leicester star is on also on Newcastle’s radar ahead of January (The Northern Echo).
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed recently that Maddison would prefer to wait until next summer before leaving the King Power Stadium so he knows which clubs can offer him Champions League football (GiveMeSport).
Jones has now said that the Magpies have identified the 26-year-old as their number one target for next summer.
He told GiveMeSport: “James Maddison is going to be on the move in 2023 and Newcastle United are growing in confidence that he might join them. They are now profiling him as the top target.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Despite Newcastle’s impressive start to the season, I do not expect them to finish in the top four, which might potentially scupper their chance to sign Maddison. It remains to be seen if Spurs will pursue the 26-year-old next summer as I expect us to sign an attacking midfielder (potentially McKennie or Malinovskyi) in January.
