Newcastle United beat Tottenham to free transfer of Antonio Cordero

Newcastle United beat Tottenham to the signing of exciting Spanish talent Antonio Cordero, with the 18-year-old now set to join the Tyneside club on a free transfer this summer.

A few months ago, it was reported that Tottenham Hotspur were monitoring Spanish teenager and versatile forward Antonio Cordero.

Tottenham Hotspur were said to have contacted the representatives of the teenager, who has racked up five goals and five assists in 32 appearances for Spanish side Malaga.

However, they weren’t the only ones interested, as the 18-year-old was also attracting attention from a host of top sides across Europe.

Now, fresh reports from TBR Football reveal that Newcastle United have sealed the signing of Antonio Cordero.

It’s been claimed that the versatile forward has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Magpies, with his current deal set to expire this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side have reportedly been working on a deal for the Spanish forward for nearly a year, and now look to have landed him, beating a number of Premier League clubs to his signature, including Tottenham Hotspur.

TBR Football’s chief correspondent wrote about the deal: “Newcastle are over the moon with this signing, they have been on Cordero’s trail for over 12 months and have put a lot of work into it.

“A host of other clubs had talks, with him but the player has opted for Newcastle, and this isn’t them just paying over the odds and blowing other offers away, the player sees Newcastle as his best option which is really satisfying to them.”

Spurs still expected to be active in the summer transfer window

While this might seem like a blow, especially as the winger was signed on a free, Spurs are still expected to be busy this summer.

The Lilywhites continue to be linked with a host of wide players, with Tyler Dibling reported to be Tottenham’s top target.

The middle of the park is also an area of concern for the N17 club, and according to recent reports, the midfield position is said to be the priority for Spurs this summer.

The transfer window is expected to open rather early this summer, which means that Spurs can get their business done on time, as they look to prepare for next season.
