‘News will come’ – Player wanted by Spurs admits he could sign for other club

Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target, Memphis Depay, has admitted that he is hopeful of playing for Barcelona next season.

Depay is coming off what is arguably his best-ever individual season, with the striker scoring 20 goals and registering 11 assists in Ligue 1.

The 27-year-old, who is currently with the Netherlands squad for the European Championships, will be a free agent when his contract with Lyon runs out at the end of this month.

Depay has seemingly been on Spurs’ radar for a long time, with the Dutchman being linked with a move to the club back when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge in 2019.

FC Inter News reported last month that Tottenham were eyeing a surprise move for Depay, whose proposed move to Barcelona was said to be stalling.

However, the former Manchester United forward has now seemingly crushed Tottenham’s hopes of landing him by admitting that he hopes to have a contract signed with the Catalan giants over the coming weeks.

When asked about his future, Depay told Voetbal International: “Everyone knows my name has been linked with Barca for some time.

“I want to play for Ronald Koeman. Be patient and the news will come.

“We have to wait, but I would say that (a move to Barcelona) could soon be definitively fixed.”
