Nicolo Zaniolo responds to speculation over his future amid Spurs links

AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo has spoken about the transfer speculation which was circulating during the summer window amid reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italian international was heavily linked with a move to north London with Spurs head coach Antonio Conte said to have been heavily insisting the club tried to land the player before the window slammed shut (CalcioMercato).

The Evening Standard offered a contrasting viewpoint after claiming that Tottenham had cooled their interest in Zaniolo, having initially been offered the chance to bid for the 23-year-old, until the Serie A outfit changed their mind and wanted to keep him at the club.

Zaniolo is out of contract at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer of 2024 (transfermarkt) and insisted that speculation over his future is not something that is new to him and is instead focused on playing football having returned from a recent shoulder injury.

Speaking at a press conference, he told Football Italia: “It wasn’t an unusual summer for me, it always seems like I have to leave and then I stay, these are speculations and thoughts you have.

“I still have a year and a half left on my contract to talk about it, it’s not the right time right now because we have HJK Helsinki and Atalanta, I’m focused on the pitch.”

Zaniolo’s injury history is always a concern, however, he does possess the ability to unlock a defence that Tottenham are currently desperately lacking in their performances this season.

Roma are unlikely to risk him entering the final year of his contract and a new deal is probably set to materialise over the coming months.
