‘No-brainer’ – Pundit claims England man would be ‘a great signing’ for Spurs

Kevin Phillips believes that Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard would be a good fit for Antonio Conte’s set-up at Tottenham.

As things stand, Tottenham do not appear close to making any new signings in the transfer window. If reports are to be believed, Conte wants three new players to be brought into the club this month – a right wing-back, a midfielder and a forward.

AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie is alleged to be Spurs’ number one midfield target, with Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli backed to leave the club before the end of the month (Fabrizio Romano on LWOS podcast).

Lingard, who is now into the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford, is thought to be another name on the North Londoners radar.

Phillips believes signing the Man Utd man on a free transfer has no downsides for the Lilywhites, and backed the England international to succeed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of Lingard, the pundit told Football Insider: “That would be a great signing. I would have reservations if they had to pay a fair few quid but on a free, it is a no-brainer.

“I think that could be the signing of the summer, especially if he puts in performances like he did at West Ham.

“I think he’d be a good fit at Tottenham. His work rate and his ability will appeal to Conte.

“It depends where he goes in and plays but you’d think it would. be as one of those players in behind [Harry] Kane. He could be the replacement for Dele Alli, if he leaves as expected.

“There’s no doubt about it, on a free, Lingard would be a great signing.”

I believe Lingard would be a better fit for Conte’s system than Dele as unlike the Spurs midfielder, the Man Utd man does not dwell on the ball and always looks to play forward.

However, one would expect plenty of competition for the 29-year-old in the summer if he is available on a free transfer.

Lingard might prefer to move to a club like West Ham where he is more likely to be a guaranteed starter.
