‘No excuses’ – Publication rips into on-loan Tottenham man for latest display

Sport have revealed that Sergio Reguilon’s performance in Atletico Madrid’s friendly against Besiktas left a lot to be desired.

Reguilon has endured a nightmare of a season since moving to Atletico on loan last summer, with the left-back having been sidelined for significant chunks of the campaign with multiple injuries.

The Spaniard recovered from his most recent hamstring problem to take his place on the bench in Atletico’s 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano over the weekend.

The left-back, as well as former Tottenham man, Matt Doherty, both got a chance to impress as the La Liga side took on Besiktas in a friendly on Wednesday.

However, it appears that both players gave a poor account of themselves as Atletico came away with a 2-0 loss from Turkey.

While lamenting the poor options that Diego Simeone has on the bench, Sport state that neither Reguilon nor Doherty ‘passed the test’ in Istanbul.

The outlet adds that there are ‘no excuses’ for the pair performing as poorly as they did, which perhaps suggests that their chances of getting competitive minutes have only further diminished.

It has been clear for a while that Atletico are not going to buy Reguilon permanently.

However, Spurs would have hoped that the left-back would get enough minutes to perhaps convince some other suitors from La Liga to come calling this summer.

As things stand, even that appears quite unlikely.
