‘No surprise’ – Ange Postecoglou reacts departure of key backroom figure

Ange Postecoglou has said that he is not surprised that a club of Birmingham City’s stature came calling for Chris Davies after it was officially confirmed that the Tottenham senior assistant coach will take over as the manager of the Championship side.

Davies arrived at Hotspur Way last summer, soon after Postecoglou took as the club’s head coach, with the Welshman joining as the Australian’s senior assistant.

The 39-year-old, who had previously worked as Brendan Rodger’s assistant at Liverpool, Celtic and Leicester City, worked closely with the Spurs squad across the 2023-24 season.

However, he will no longer be at the North London club next season after it was announced by Birmingham City on Thursday that Davies will take charge at St Andrew’s ahead of the new campaign.

The departing Spurs senior assistant coach has seemingly been in demand for a while, having been heavily linked with the Swansea City job towards the end of last year (Evening Standard).

Postecoglou reacts to Chris Davies leaving Tottenham

Postecoglou has now spoken highly of Davies and wished him the best in his new adventure in the Midlands.

When asked about his assistant taking over at Birmingham, the Tottenham head coach said (via Football.London): “Chris is an outstanding individual, he’s done some fantastic work with us in the last season and as I’ve said before, that will attract attention, so it’s no surprise to me that a club of Birmingham City’s stature have shown an interest in him.

“I’d like to thank Chris for all his hard work, and we wish him all the best.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how in-demand Davies was, one suspects that Postecoglou would have half-expected him to leave this summer.

So the Aussie coach would have had some replacements at the back of his mind already and one would expect Tottenham to swiftly make an appointment.

There is also the possibility of one of Mile Jedinak or Ryan Mason now being promoted to fill Davies’ role.
